With Store Fuglede station as a gateway to a bygone era, the veteran railway Gørlev – Store Fuglede an attraction that attracts tourists to West Zealand, a family experience that summer house guests and locals return to.
The veteran railway conveys the story of our grandparents' train journey, where the ticket is purchased at the station ticket office and you wait for the train in the waiting room.
The nature trail, at a new location immediately next to the veteran track, will be a delight for both walking, cycling and horse riding. Along the way there are a few "rest areas" with benches so you can enjoy your packed lunch.
The combination of a veteran track and nature trail means that more users can enjoy the old track area.
From both the nature trail and the vintage train, which ambles along at a leisurely pace, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Åmosen Nature Park, the hills at Kløveshøj and Halleby Å.
In Store Fuglede the history of the station town, which grew up after the construction of the railway in 1898, is brought to life.
From a step at Maderne, Tissø Viking Center can be reached on foot via a new hiking trail.
The Veterans Railway with the station building in Store Fugledecan become a catalyst for local cultural and social events.
How to implement the vision
The two parts of the project are interconnected: The veteran track cannot be established without moving the trail, but it does not make sense to move the trail without also building the veteran track.
The current path will be moved to a new location on the railway area, partly across the railway ditch, and partly in the snow belts along the railway. A few "rest areas" will be established in the snow belts.
The area where the path will be located is part of the track area and is therefore owned by Kalundborg Municipality.
The veteran railway track is being reestablished on the old railway substructure (where the path is now located) between Gørlev and Store Fuglede.
New bridges will be established for the path over Madegrøften, Halleby Å and Tjørnhøjsvej.
Barriers will be installed at the road crossings on Ulstrupvej in Gørlev and on Tystrupvej in Store Fuglede.
The work on track laying and crossings must be carried out by professional railway contractors.
Other tasks such as cleaning ditches, establishing platforms, moving paths, etc. can be carried out by local companies.
Kalundborg Municipality owns the old railway areas. The Danish Transport Authority has expressed a positive opinion about the project.
The new footpath between the footbridge and Tissø Viking Center is expected to be established by Kalundborg Municipality.
The station in Store Fuglede is the primary reason for the project. Vestsjællands Veterantog purchased the station building in 2019 and is well underway with the renovation.
Economy
Price estimates from several companies show that the price for the re-establishment of the railway track and crossings will be approx. 40 million DKK. Prices for moving the path have not yet been obtained. The project will be financed by foundation and EU funds.
Vestsjællands Veterantog has a number of relevant materials for the veteran railway in stock. The value of these is approximately 1.5 million kroner. In addition, Vestsjællands Veterantog contributes with voluntary working hours to, among other things, dialogue with the Danish Transport Authority along the way and the approval of the completed project by the Danish Transport Authority.
Support from Kalundborg Municipal Council
In February 2025, the municipal council adopted a letter of support for the project, which can help pave the way for the large foundations.
